The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the organization’s financial operations in compliance with donor requirements, organizational policies, and statutory regulations. The role ensures accuracy, transparency, and accountability in all financial transactions and provides reliable financial reports to support management decision-making and donor reporting.
1. Financial Management and Reporting
Maintain cashbooks and accounts records and ensure payments are allocated to the correct project and budget line.
Ensure all the necessary documentation is collected, checked and attached to payment vouchers.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports in line with internal and donor requirements.
Ensure proper coding, posting, and reconciliation of all financial transactions for the project floats and make sure it is in line with project budget lines
Prepare monthly expenditure report
Conduct monthly account reconciliations, including bank, cash, and balance sheet accounts.
Monitor budget utilization and provide variance analysis reports to project managers and management.
Ensure timely submission of donor financial reports with supporting documentation.
2. Budgeting and Forecasting
Support the preparation of annual budgets and project-specific budgets.
Track expenditures against approved budgets and alert management to potential overruns.
Participate in financial planning and forecasting exercises.
3. Compliance and Internal Controls
Ensure all accounting processes adhere to the organization’s financial policies and donor compliance requirements.
Support internal and external audit processes by preparing schedules, providing documentation, and responding to audit queries.
Implement and monitor strong internal control systems to safeguard organizational assets.
4. Treasury and Cash Management
Oversee cash flow management, ensuring adequate liquidity for project and operational needs.
Manage petty cash and ensure timely replenishment and accurate reconciliation.
Prepare fund transfer requests and maintain relationships with banks.
5. Payroll and Statutory Compliance
Review and process payroll in coordination with HR.
Ensure timely payment of taxes, pension, and other statutory deductions.
Maintain accurate employee compensation records and ensure confidentiality.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred).
Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within an NGO or donor-funded project.
Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS) and NGO financial management practices.
Proven experience in preparing donor financial reports
Skills and Competencies:
Excellent knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
