Job Description

The Brooke is a leading UK equine welfare charity that has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 with a country office in Addis Ababa. The Brooke aims to improve the welfare of working equines, together with the livelihoods of people dependent on these animals. Brooke Ethiopia (B-Eth) has entered a new Strategic phase and by the year 2020, the Brooke Ethiopia will sustainably improve the equine welfare of some of the neediest rural and urban equines in Ethiopia. In order to achieve this, the role of Driver/Logistics Assistants is critical.

Purpose of the job:

The Senior Mechanic/Logistics Assistant Officer will provide comprehensive mechanical support to the drivers, ensuring that all vehicle systems are functioning properly. This includes performing maintenance checks, troubleshooting any mechanical issues that may arise, making necessary repairs, and assisting with any adjustments needed to optimize vehicle performance. The goal is to guarantee the driver’s safety and to ensure the vehicle operates smoothly and reliably throughout the event with the standard of INGO working environment. 

He/she is also responsible for overseeing and required logistics activities within the organization, including  supervising and adjusting the utility services of the office building with regular performance check, ensure timely payment of utilities and other essential services as required.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Vehicle Inspection and Diagnostics

    1. Conduct regular inspections of organization vehicles.

    2. Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues.

    3. Identify the need for repairs or maintenance.

  2. Preventive Maintenance

    1. Perform routine tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid top-ups.

    2. Ensure all vehicles meet safety and emission standards.

    3. Maintain scheduled service logs and records.

  3. Repairs and Replacements

    1. Repair or replace faulty engine components, transmissions, brakes, suspension parts, and other vehicle systems.

    2. Install new parts and accessories as required.

    3. Test repaired vehicles to ensure proper functioning.

  4. Inventory Management

    1. Monitor and maintain the inventory of spare parts, tools, and repair materials.

    2. Order and stock necessary parts to ensure availability for repairs.

  5. Documentation and Reporting

    1. Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repairs performed.

    2. Report on vehicle condition, repair status, and maintenance costs.

    3. Prepare regular reports for management on vehicle fleet status and upcoming maintenance schedules.

  6. Compliance and Safety

    1. Ensure all maintenance activities comply with safety regulations and organizational policies.

    2. Conduct safety checks and ensure vehicles are roadworthy before use.

  7. Collaboration and Communication

    1. Coordinate with drivers regarding vehicle issues and scheduled maintenance.

    2. Provide technical advice and support regarding vehicle use and maintenance.

  8. Training and Development

    1. Stay updated on the latest automotive repair techniques and technologies.

    2. Train drivers on basic vehicle maintenance procedures if needed.

  9. Logistics Support 

  • Driving office vehicles for the transportation of authorized personnel and delegations, delivery or collection of goods, etc.

  • Give driving and other support to visitors and guests while moving in Addis Ababa or to project offices

  • Follow up yearly examination of vehicles at road transport authority.

  • Provide support in rental vehicles

  • Keep track of vehicle service and maintenance

  • Assist with property inventory and procurement

  • Supervise and make the necessary adjustment for the utility services of the office building with regular performance check (this could be done through outsourcing specified professionals as needed).

Job Requirements

  • Diploma in Auto-Mechanic or related fields from a recognized college with a minimum of five years of proven work experience preferably in an INGO.

  • Excellent knowledge of machinery and hydraulic, electrical, and other systems and their components

  • Demonstrated experience in professional report writing 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and strong fundamental computer skills

  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment

  • A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Valid 3-grade driving license
